Mystical Fog

Many photographers go to Bosque Del Apache in New Mexico to photograph birds. And they should. Each winter, thousands of migrating Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese fill the ponds and fields of Bosque with many creative opportunities. Photographing them is rewarding. However, at Bosque, there is more to enjoy than just birds. Eight years ago, on my first visit to Bosque Del Apache and New Mexico, I immediately fell in love with the light that shapes the landscape artistically. Initially, I went to photograph the birds, which I loved to do, but the unique and special light touched something spiritual in me. That soulfulness has brought me back every year since. Yes, the birds are exciting and fun to photograph, but the light on the landscape has a mystical voice that is equally alluring. One morning last week during my annual workshop, we set out to photograph the early morning lift-off of geese from a refuge pond, but Mother Nature put on another show that stopped us in our tracks and made us forget about birds. Morning fog, uncommon at Bosque, transformed the landscape into something hushed and mystical. It was magical. Wherever we go, we must remember there is always more.
