Interesting Light

Photographers think about light constantly. And we should. For us, light is everything. We need light to create photographs, but what light is best? When we begin photography, we learn soft, warm light is "good" light. Such light is utilized in landscape photography during golden hour or in a studio using a large softbox to illuminate a subject. I treasure every moment I encounter featuring good light, but I have become equally excited by "interesting" light. Interesting light could be backlighting, a dramatic beam of light, or something unusual such as stage lighting or light painting. Good light is unquestionably beautiful, but we should develop an eye and appreciation for interesting light too. A significant reason I am captivated by Bosque Del Apache, and New Mexico, is the abundance of good and interesting light. Each adds to the aura of the landscape and wildlife. At times, such as a unique morning featuring fog and snow geese at first light, interesting light brings out the soulfulness of everything it touches, including yourself.
