Yellowstone Winter
As December and a busy 2024 come to a close, it is time to focus on the many creative opportunities I have scheduled for 2025. For the past few January's, I have started the new year photographing in Yellowstone National Park. It is breathtaking. The extreme winter conditions in Yellowstone are exactly why January in Yellowstone is superb. Temperatures well below zero, deep snow, heavy frost, and steam transform the wildlife and landscape into magical scenes that seem otherworldly. Bison, covered in frost as they graze for grasses near hydrothermal features, are giant, fascinating beasts. Otters play in open water and on ice. Bighorn sheep stand majestically among rock croppings. Trees, bathed in steam and ice, stand stoically against the grip of winter while casting long shadows in the snow. Steam rises from picturesque, historic rivers. The landscape, sculpted by wind and snow, rolls in captivating beauty in every direction. Geyers spew towering columns of steam while minerals create brilliant abstracts in the mud. And if you are lucky, you may hear the distinctive howl of a wolf or, better yet, photograph one. Everything about Yellowstone in winter is captivating. I have no desire to rush time, but I cannot wait for the adventures of 2025.
