Every one of us needs a wake-up call now and again. For those of you reading this, please, take a moment and consider where you are, who you are with, and what you have. We all have so much. We all have so much opportunity for more. So many don’t.
Yes, we all need a loud reality check now and again. I got mine loudly and succinctly when visiting a family along the river Maranon. We were invited to have lunch with a family at their house in a local village. The house had a grass roof and only one wall which left most of the house, and family, exposed to the elements, animals, and insects. The only furniture was a few rough, hand-made benches and a small table. Everyone ate, slept, and lived on the floor of that one room. That small house, maybe 16 feet by 24 feet, was shared by a husband, a wife, and 11 children. The whole scene made me weep. I did not cry because I felt they had so little; I wept because it was a graphic reminder that I have so much.
This beautiful young girl saw me crying and she looked up at me with great concern. She did not know why I was crying or who I was but, her innocent care reconfirmed for me that children all over the world are the same.
